P rivate Art Lessons

• Would you like to learn the basics of a new medium?
• Perhaps you've never really sat down and painted a picture before but you've always felt inspired to do so.
• Maybe you finally have some free time to explore and developing your artistic side.

Whatever your motivation, I'm happy to help!

I understand how downright daunting it can be to try to learn a new skill on your own. I don't know what I would have done without those kind souls throughout my life who have offered advice or lent a hand and shown me how to accomplish something I was interested in but unsure about. I don't see doing art any differently than learning any new skill.

This is just my opinion about art, and it is rather unpopular with some artists who enjoy the mysticism that surrounds artists and their work. But I personally believe that everyone is creative and we all have our unique and valid way of seeing the world. How we end up sharing that by putting it down on paper (or carving it, molding it, planting it, building it, writing about it or baking it) involves "some skill". Sure some people pick up certain skills faster than others (sometimes it seems the only way I'll get a green thumb is to paint it green), and there is no disputing that some folks have more of a knack for creative expression than others, but everyone can learn the basic rules and "tricks" that most artists use to create a picture in any given medium.

Now, I am by no means an expert - not by a Herculean long shot (if I was I'd probably be doing things differently). But I am happy to share the things that I have learned through the years to anyone who would like to give it a try. I am what most folks would call a realist when it comes to my style of artwork (though certainly not my style of living). That means that I like to draw things pretty much the way they appear to me. In other words, I am not a cubist (I hate the feeling of being boxed in), abstract artist (I have a hard enough time figuring things out than to leave any guesswork to my art) or expressionist (I prefer to express myself verbally - in case you hadn't noticed).

And while I have experimented with numerous medium, I do seem to end up "executing" most of my artwork in pencil, chalk pastel or watercolor painting. So those are the mediums I am most comfortable helping others learn. So, if you would like to learn the basics of how to draw, do a chalk pastel painting or watercolor painting, and if you want to approach it in a fun, slightly informal but none the less professional manner - then I'm happy to help!

I offer private classes to budding artists of all ages.

My approach to teaching art is the same regardless of emotional or chronilogical age:

1.) First and foremost - to have fun!
2.) To create a safe environment that encourages carefree self expression and skill development.
3.) To challenge you to view and interact with your world through fresh and creative eyes.
4.) To help build a repertoire of technical skills that will carry you forward in your favorite medium.
5.) To nurture self expression and the confidence to shamelessly share your creations with others.
